The Canine Microbiome

Participants will learn about the gut microbiome in animals, with a focus on the canine microbiome.  This course includes the concept and definition of dysbiosis, the difference between methodologies used to study the microbiome, and key bacteria present in healthy dogs. This includes looking at how the gut microbiome changes over a dog's lifetime and external factors that may cause these changes. In addition, the presenter will discuss the meaning of microbiome diversity, and why diversity is important.

Antibiotics, Probiotics & Fecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT)

Participants will learn about diseases that have been associated with alterations in the microbial composition of the canine gut and ways to treat these diseases through manipulating the microbiome. Topics include the overuse of antibiotics and their consequence on the canine microbiome and the variability in efficacy of probiotics. Also included is an in-depth look at fecal microbiome transplants (FMT) in treating canine disease, including donor selection and screening; protocols for processing, storage, and delivery of FMT; risks and limitations; and common questions.
